  Evolution.

The mere mention of the word raises the hair on my neck. And yet, we see the tell-tale signs of it everywhere. Watching PBS with my daughters the other day, one of the programs discussing dinosaurs was touting that the turtle was around millions of years before dinosaurs came into existance. Fortunately I was there to remind my oldest girl of what happened in Genesis on day six, but if I hadn't been home I know my wife would have taken care of this.

Television news, books, magazines, newspapers - they are all on the "evolution" bandwagon, promoting the theory as fact. Why is that?

The answer is quite simple, really. If evolution is true then creation never happened. And if creation never happened that means there is no God who created all things. And if there is no God then there is no moral right and wrong - no "Ten Commandments", and that Jesus character was just another prominent figure in history.

You see, without God there is no condemnation for the evil that we do. There is no heaven, and better yet there is no hell. We just do as we please for a time, then we die.

But wait just a minute! If evolution is factual then why is it still called "the theory of evolution"? That answer too, is simple. Because not only has it never been proven, but the theory has been disproven on multiple fronts. Yet academics cling to this belief. What do you call something that people believe in without any proof? A faith-based religion.

And that brings me to the reason for this note.

The University of Wisconsin System is a State (meaning taxpayer) funded organization receiving 32% of its operating budget from the State of Wisconsin. That's nearly one billion (with a "B") dollars. In recent years the state budget crisis has forced cuts to the UW System of more than 100 million dollars, but they are still getting a pretty good chunk of your tax dollars, and mine.

So what does the state budget have to do with evolution? It was recently brought to my attention that the University of Wisconsin's Oshkosh campus (where I happen to work at my 'day job') has a professor, nay a Dean, working there who is actively promoting an anti-christian campaign against creation!

Michael Zimmerman, Dean of the College of Letter and Science, began promoting an activity in the fall of 2004 called the Clergy Letter Project. Full details of this project can be found on-line at <http://www.uwosh.edu/colleges/cols/clergy_project.htm>. Which is why I have a problem.

If the UW System receives 30+% of its budget from tax dollars then it's safe to assume that each of the campus's, including Oshkosh, are operating at that same level. The Oshkosh campus hosts a web site which actively seeks Christian (yea, right) pastors to sign a petition stating they believe in evolution over the Biblical account of creation.

Someone please tell me why it is wrong for a city to sponsor a nativity scene or a court to post a replication of the Ten Commandments, yet a taxpayer funded web site can promote evolution over creation and a State employee is responsible for heading up the project? Does this make anyone else angry?!?!

I understand that people have a right to believe what they want to believe. I even support the Dean's right to act on behalf of his beliefs, as a private citizen. But when he acts in the official capacity of his position as Dean of COLS and uses University (State) owned equipment to promote his beliefs, then I have to wonder why there isn't more of an outrage!

Probably because this is the first many of you are hearing about it. Now that you have heard about it what can you do?

Well, before you call the state and question them about this you could start with trying to get this web site taken off state owned, taxpayer funded equipment.

Call the UW Oshkosh at (920) 424-0300 which is the Provost's office. Dr. Lane Earns is the Provost and Vice Chancellor, and Dean Zimmerman answers to him. If enough outside pressure comes in I'm willing to bet they would ask the Dean to find another place to host this site.

Beyond that, take a look at the site - especially the list of churches and pastors who have signed the petition. See if there's anyone in your community and call them as well. I'd love to know why the shepherd of a "Christian" flock is endorsing anything other than the Biblical account in Genesis.

In Wisconsin there are 22 churches who will promote Darwin's birthday on the so-called "Evilution Sunday", rather than mention Presidents Day., Of those, 9 "pastors" are female, two from the same Methodist church - hmmm. Another is a pastor of a Methodist church I used to attend and knowing him I'm not at all surprised - he supports abortion too. Take a look for yourself and see if you recognize anyone, then maybe give them a call and question why or when the word of man became more reliable than the word of God.!
