My reply to her is below but I'll paste her comments in
first:
Here's my written reply: Dear Senator Roessler, For years I have supported you with my vote because of a meeting we had back in 1999 which I'm sure you've forgotten about, understandably so considering your position and the thousands of people you likely meet each year. Since our meeting I have always believed, and defended, your position as a moderate because I believed that you truly had the best interests of your constituency at heart. I am a solid conservative who typically votes third-party but as I've stated, you have received my vote in every election since I've moved to the 18th District. Your vote on this bill, even though it's only a committee vote and still must be passed by the full Senate, the Assembly and signed by the Governor before it becomes law, demonstrates to me that you no longer have the best interest of those you represent at heart but are now more interested in pleasing the special interest groups. Abortifacients kill humans - period. Punishing an innocent child for the crime of his father is no way to carry out justice. My heart goes out to women who suffer from these violent, often brutal attacks but the act of sexual aggression on the part of a man does not cause a pregnancy. Only God creates life and if it is His will to bring a child into the world through someones sin then that is God's business and it's not up to "us" to make a determination regarding the life He has chosen to create. Thousands of couples go childless every year and still "we" murder thousands of babies every day. Where is the justice for those couples who want to, and try desperately to have children but can't? Your vote to promote death through pharmacological abortion will not only cause me to no longer vote for you but I will make sure everyone I know is well informed of your part in this parade of death, sponsored by the Liberal side of the Senate. Your arguments concerning "Catholic" hospitals carry no weight with me since a) I'm not Catholic and b) the Vatican has denounced all forms of abortion, including use of the so-called "morning after" pill. Catholic hospitals are corporations first and a corporation has no obligation to report to the Pope. However, the people who work at those hospitals may no longer have a choice to follow their conscience and/or their Pope if this legislation passes. And what difference does it make if this medication is available over the counter? People can go buy a hand gun "over the counter" too, but that doesn't give them the right to kill someone just because they own a gun that they obtained legally. You may have a chance to redeem yourself at the floor vote before the full Senate but I will be watching closely, as will many others. Remember, there is no justice in the murder of innocent, human babies. They have not been charged with any crime, they have not had their day in court before a judge and jury. Short of that we have no business killing anyone, and when I say "we" I mean "you"! Your vote to support this legislation means innocent children could be killed and you will be directly responsible if that happens. |

Apparently the good Senator wasn't too happy with my posting her email to me on the web. She called my home, where I refused to accept the call (privacy manager rocks!) so she left a three minute message on my cell phone voice mail trying to explain her position. She stated some nonsense about Wisconsin Right to Life and the Catholic League taking no position and that Catholic hospitals were already dispensing this drug so she felt supporting this bill was the right thing to do. Here's what I wrote in reply: Senator Roessler, Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to attempt contacting me by phone at both my home and cell phone numbers. I understand your preference to call me rather than reply by email, lest I post your comments for others to see, again. Unless of course I transcribe your message... There are only two points I'd like to follow up on from the voice message you left me, but first I'd like to address a point I wasn't aware of in my first reply to you. I have just read what is posted on the Senate web page as it relates to the Executive Session of the Committee on Health and Human Services, as well as the fiscal estimate. This bill seems to provide a fiscal penalty if a hospital or its employee refuses to distribute this drug. Doesn't that clause directly contradict Wisconsin Statute 253.09(1)? How will this bill reconcile itself against the existing law which allows hospitals and their employees to refuse to participate in morally objectional practices? Further, look at the list of co-sponsors to this bill. How can you state that your are not concerned with pleasing special interest groups if you are willing to throw in with this bunch? But I digress... Now to your voice mail message: First you state that Wisconsin Right to Life has not taken a position regarding SB 129. I'm sure you are aware the WRL is a compromising organization that believes it's OK to kill some of the babies, some of the time. I am a 100% pro-lifer, without exception, as is the other well known organization in our state, Pro-Life Wisconsin - a primarily Catholic organization I might add, which has openly opposed this legislation. Second, you have attempted to play a word game with me by stating that the text of the legislation, as it is propsed, would allow for the distribution of the "morning after" pill, more commonly known as "Plan B". And, you stated, that the emergency contraception described in this legislation is not an abortifacient. Well, it seems you are correct in that an abortifacient terminates a pregnancy and this drug, rather than killing a baby after the egg sack has implanted in the womb, kills the baby by preventing it from implanting thereby starving the growing life post fertalization, but pre implantation. This play on words may give you some sense of peace at night but let me borrow an analogy I'm sure you've seen come across your fax in the form of a press release. This emergency contraception, by preventing a fertalized egg from implanting, is likened to a hunter who, rather than waiting to see what's in the bushes, just starts shooting.
By attempting this word play and trying to argue over semantics you ignore the fact that probably tens of thousands of couples have "unprotected" sexual contact every day on this planet and not every one of those encounters results in a fertalized egg. God alone creates life. Once He did it from the dust of the earth and another time He created life in the womb without a human father, but He alone creates life and He does it at the moment of fertalization. Since current medical science cannot determine if an egg has been fertalized until after it has implanted your position is nothing more than smoke and mirrors. This legislation could very well end the life of a human being. Unless you think that the sperm from a human male joining with the egg of a human female results in something other than a human baby. So again, I would ask you to reconsider your position and vote against this bill when it comes to the Senate floor. In the mean time I intend to dig my heals in and work with organizations like Pro-Life Wisconsin, and individuals such as Senator Mary Lazich (the sole "no" vote in committee) to make sure everyone in Wisconsin, especially the 18th District, knows what this legislation will mean to hospitals, to those employed by hospitals, and to women. |
